Since my current favorite restaurant is Zaré at Fly Trap, we had to revisit for my birthday. We went back for Meatball Monday [aka Kufteh Tabrizi]. How could we resist a description like this?
The giant meat ball is comprised of Niman Ranch beef and veal, then stuffed with a meaty treat that changes weekly. The flavor is also fueled by Persian lime, turmeric, savory, saffron, dried fruits, a handful of fresh organic herbs and torshi.
The meaty treat stuffed inside the softball-sized meatball on Monday night was a chicken leg. At first, I thought it might be too much meat for me, but the way everything mixed together made it less heavy. It was very tasty, and I ended up eating more of it myself rather than sharing with my dining companions.
We also ordered two starters to share among the four of us – the roasted beet salad and bone marrow. While tasty and pretty amazing, they were not as photogenic as the main courses – the meatball and pictured below, ling cod, short ribs, and a cous cous salad.
After all of that, I still had a little room for dessert, and we shared the Goat Cheese Cheesecake! It was more like Ryan insisted on dessert because they wanted to bring something out with a candle, and they didn’t just stick a candle into the giant meatball.
It was a delicious meal, and it looks like I’ll be coming up with all sorts of excuses to dine at Zaré at Fly Trap. It may be one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco – not only because of the food, but also the spectacular service!
