Cafe Du Nord + Recovering Irma

Last night, I crossed off #58 on the 101 in 1001: Go see a show at Cafe Du Nord.

San Francisco is home to many historic venues, and for some reason when I was creating my list, I wrote Cafe Du Nord down as one of those venues I’d love to visit soon. Built in 1906, Du Nord has a history as a brothel, a speakeasy, and the meeting place of secret societies.

I couldn’t put off a visit to Cafe Du Nord any longer when I found out that two bands that I know and love were playing on the same night as a combined effort to support the documentary film, Recovering Irma. This documentary is an independent film project, aimed at breaking the silence of domestic violence by lending a contemporary voice to a family’s complex inheritance.

Festizio.

Johnny Hi Fi.

I was also introduced to Lion Riding Horses, another local rock band.

It was a Sunday night, and I had work the next day, so I didn’t stay out for too long. Here’s a photograph to document the moment I finally crossed this “to do” off my list!

  • I had no idea about the venue’s history – but when I was trying to think of how I’d describe it, “bordello” and “speakeasy” were two words that came up. The spirit is alive! ;)

I love that photo of the three of us, too.

    • Bet when they put in those lights in the 1970s, that was a major upgrade or something. ;) But yes, love the photo. Thank you for being part of my Sunday! I’ll have to ask you for tips re: the eyeliner and eye shadow when I find an occasion to wear them.

    • It was a lot of fun, though I caught myself yawning early on in the evening. :/ I need my sleep these days! It’s funny because buildings in San Francisco really aren’t that old when compared to the rest of the world and because of the big 1906 earthquake, but there’s still so much history behind everything.

  • i really want to see that documentary! you think I’ll be able to netflix it soon? And i think its so cool it was a brothel. creepy but cool. I cant believe its over 100 years old!

    • They are still filming! The benefit concert was to raise money and awareness, so that they can finish the film. So no, not available on Netflix soon… :/

  • Props to you for getting another item off your list! And that’s one item on my list for if/when I ever do make it down to San Francisco.

    • Yay! If you know when, make sure to look up their calendar. They’ve got a LOT of shows.

  • Whoa, that first photo is amazing! I was trying to find a way to capture it with my iPhone camera but, of course, it wouldn’t come out right. Love how the blackness blurs at the bottom. I may have to borrow it for our blog :D

Thanks so much for coming out!!

    • It was a great show, and I loved checking out the venue for the first time. Feel free to “borrow” my picture anytime! :P

  • I keep seeing pics of just the three of us on stage… feels so empty without a fourth member, haha. Before we started I kept thinking we were waiting for someone.
