Eat SF : Caught in the Fly Trap – Zare at Fly Trap

While we did not attend BlogHer Food this past weekend, Ryan and I joined a group of attendees for a pre-conference dinner. Carol at Uncovering Food organized the dinner via Twitter, and 12 of us met up at Zare at Fly Trap on Thursday evening.

I ordered seared day boat scallops served with saffron tagliatelle, crushed fava beans / English peas, barberries, sumac. Look at how photogenic my scallops were!

<p>Ryan ordered the filet mignon with gorgonzola, dates, watercress, fennel, and potato gratin. It was absolutely tasty, and its appearance really doesn’t quite do it justice.</p>

Carol and Nimisha of Club Dine In! ordered these saffron risotto balls to share. I was lucky enough to try a bite, and they were delicious!

I’m glad we decided to join in. We love trying out restaurants all over the city, and it turned out to be a fantastic introduction to a great restaurant that we’re hoping to revisit soon. Great service and great food! From the get go, they were extremely accommodating and seemed dedicated to making the most of our dining experience.

I can honestly say that Zaré at Fly Trap was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in San Francisco.

    In fact, the scallops are the sort of thing I was talking about on e-mail; still in the ocean yesterday! incidentally, do you know if they were dived or dredged (diving is more labour intensive, but better for the sea floor, and other species).

    My big issue with the steak is that it’s smothered by the sauce. In fact, if the menu said specifically “in sauce”, I’d have asked if I could have the sauce served “on the side”, and possibly sent that back saying that I want the sauce served on the side.

    • I’m not sure on the diving or dredging of the scallops. I can ask to see if they know the next time I am there. Like I mentioned, the steak tasted way better than it looked. The sauce is not as flavorful as the color might imply. It tasted very good together. Another gal ordered the filet mignon, but she couldn’t have gorgonzola, so they gave her a different sauce on the side.

        Over here, if they serve dived scallops, restaurants normally only serve “king scallops” (those look like kings in the photo) and specifically say “dived scallops” in the menu because you can charge a premium, due to the real environmental benefits of the more labour intensive fishing technique.

        Also, I’ve nothing against serving a sauce with a steak, but I’m not keen on srenching the steak with the sauce, since that can be used as a technique for covering up an over-cooked and dried out steak. (This is even more vital with venison than with beef.)

  • scallops are the “supermodels” of the food world, always photogenic! They are really easy to mess up though, I made a lot of horrible ones on my early culinary school days. What a strange name for a restaurant! all the good ones have weird names though!

    • From what I understand, Fly Trap was the original space’s name, and Zare is the last name of the chef, Hoss Zare, so Zare at Fly Trap is really just that chef at the particular location. It IS a strange name though.

    • I’m not a big health food nut, but when it comes down to food, I feel healthy just means balanced and nutritious. Lots of nutrition in the fava beans / English peas since they didn’t even cook them! Just threw them into the food processor, according to the server. :P
