Deep-fried Ambition

Thanks to a weekend trip to Sacramento for the California State Fair, I am now armed with most of the information I need to:

- raise chickens for some delicious eggs!
- maintain a worm farm – backyard composting via The Worm Factory 360
- possibly set up an aquaculture environment in the backyard

This is, of course, overly ambitious, as we’ve not even finished putting up our fence since we tore it down. Plus, our backyard is TINY. We are attempting to fit the chickens, worms, AND fish?!

RV may or may not have had the West Nile virus last week after mosquitoes feasted upon us in our sleep, but there was definitely no fence-building while he was out of commission for three days last week. We get the blood test results tomorrow. I was a little worried that he’d not make it through the fair, but he wasn’t feeling terribly ill on Saturday.

Since it was my first time at the State Fair, I had to indulge in deep-fried goodness and ice cold beverages to keep cool.

We didn’t see any shows or catch specific performers. We just walked through the exhibits, played some overpriced carnival games to win a weird stuffed banana with a face, and of course, visited the newborn “bacon.” SO CUTE.

There are definitely calves in these cows!

More California State Fair photos: here!

In case you were wondering about the weird stuffed banana with a face… RV had seen larger versions of said banana through the gaps in the fence as we were walking from the car to the fair entrance, and he had made a declaration that he would be taking home a banana.

Well, here he is:

    Ooh, I <3 state/county fairs.

Will you really be raising your own chicken(s)? A friend did it just so she could get fresh eggs, so it may not be such a bad idea.

That’s the plan! We’re hoping to raise two or three hens that produce about 3-4 eggs/week each. Still doing the research for it, and once we have our backyard set up, we’ll look into chicken adoptions!

I love going to fairs…mostly been to county fairs but they’re all the same. Fried food, rickety amusement rides and farm animals. I got sick eating a fried twinkie once (and the proceeded to go on the Gravitron…not a good combo) so never again. My favorite part is looking at the animals because lets face it, it’s the only time I’ll see them not on my plate. :-P

We went to the fair on Sunday! But we missed a lot of the agriculture stuff due to time. It was exhausting. :(

The heat was definitely exhausting. Did you guys eat any of the fried foods? :P Did you see Weird Al?!

No Weird Al. We pretty much did all the kid stuff for the nieces and nephew and by the time we got through a couple of rides Stephen and I had to go. They stayed for the demo derby though.

And yes, I got a regular sized corndog at the Jumbo Corndog place. :P And cheese curds! Mmm, delicious fried food.

I have a blue ribbon for choosing a winning pig in the Alameda County Fair pig race!

There were no pig races when we went to the fair. I think that going just before the fair ends means we miss a lot of the good stuff!

Sweet mercy, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pregnant cow before! They’re huge!

That fried twinkie looks amazing! Would you believe that I’ve never had any of those beloved fried desserts that everyone always talks about? They sound delish!

yes, they were some very pregnant cows… looked like they were about to pop. :P
