Hello people of the internet! Thanks for stopping by. I think San Francisco is one dirty city, but I love it here. I'm a 9-5er with a mission to eat, drink, and travel as often as my resources allow. Documenting it is part of the fun.

Little Things 2010

My parents used to throw the big Thanksgiving party at our house, but as the years went on, others have taken the lead. Now that I also have RV’s family to consider, the holidays end up being a pretty busy time of year. On top of that, we have our friends who stay in town for the holidays to hang out with too!

Today, we’re starting the munching at a friend’s house in the afternoon. Then, we’re heading to my cousin’s for her housewarming/Thanksgiving. Once we’ve finished there, we’re hightailing across the bay to RV’s mom’s to hang out for a bit. In the morning, we’re heading to his dad’s up near Chico to help get the Christmas decorations up. Hopefully we’ll get to venture off and do our own thing for part of the weekend!

In honor of Thanksgiving month, Julie at Savvy Eats hosted a celebration of 25 days of the little things she is thankful for. Here are my 25:

01. Homemade lunches packed by RV.

02. Friends who are up to do just about anything! [Link]

03. Dinners at the parents’ house, even on short notice! [Link]

04. A good [aka relatively drama-free] relationship with the sister! [Link]

05. Parents forcing me to try everything at an early age. [Link]

06. Living on the coast where fresh, wild seafood is not difficult to find. [Link]

07. High metabolism! [Link]

08. Stocked medicine cabinet at work. [Link]

09. Relatively good immune system. [Link]

10. Being able to parallel park. [Link]

11. Good health benefits. [Link]

22. Massage. [Link]

23. Wine and beer! And during the holidays, mulled wine!

24. Technology.

25. San Francisco. California.

What are you thankful for today?

Do you express your gratitude for those people/places/little things every day?

Little Things #16-#22

It is time to play catch up once again. I’m not just thankful on a specifically designated day during the year; I’m grateful every day for what I have and who I’m surrounded by. #16 through #19 should really be one sentence, but I am thankful for each part.

#16 – Curling up on the couch with RV…

#17 – In a warm blanket… It’s been chilly these days.

#18 – Catching up on the latest Modern Family episodes… It is SUCH a funny show! I love all the characters and their quirks.

#19 – Followed by playing video games until bedtime… We are still working on Lego: Indiana Jones 2. Since we keep our calendar full, it’s taken us MONTHS to get through the games.

#20 – Costco. There are a lot of things I love about this place. There were all the organic raspberries. However, most recently, six [heavy = juicy, ripe] pomegranates! I have photos to post, so look for that later!

#21 – Acupuncture. I may be afraid of needles at the doctor’s office, but I am okay with these! My favorite acupuncturist is no longer in San Francisco, but she’s left her practice in capable hands. I tried finding some place closer, but it just wasn’t the same. Now that my HSA is set up, I will start scheduling appointments again.

#22 – Massage. Unlike acupuncture, it’s not a qualified medical expense, so it’s likely that I’ll cut back on trips to the masseuse. There’s nothing like a strong Thai massage to get those kinks out!

Little Things #13 – #15

#13 – Friends who have experience around the house.

We have recently been infested by ants. We don’t leave anything sitting out, but they are hungry little suckers. They found parts of the house we hadn’t sealed off, and they basically came in looking for food. There wasn’t a whole lot; they invaded an aloe plant and some recyclables.

As soon as I sent out a tweet about dealing with ants, friends offered various methods for handling them.

#14 – Friends with a better sense of fashion than mine.

As soon as I threw it out there that I needed a formal dress, my friends were on top of it! I received voice mails and texts regarding places to shop and what they’d seen out there. Some even offered to lend me theirs, which would’ve been awesome, but I went to the outlets to scope out the dress scene and found one!

#15 – Outlets.

Speaking of outlets, it’s hard for me to justify spending full retail price on clothing when outlets exist. Sure, it’s not the latest fashion trend, but it keeps my wallet happy, and I’m really not terribly outdated in what I wear. PLUS, I picked up a formal gown for about 1/3 of its retail price!

Friday 7 Quick Takes #007

01. I went to the orthodontist today. I wish I could say that it was one of the last visits, but I have a feeling I will continue with the appointments through the middle of next year. I am not optimistic on this front because each time I go in, something else is wrong. Teeth move. A gap has formed. My bite is open. My tongue is pushing my jaw out. You name it, it’s come up as a problem.

*insert frustrated ARGH here*

02. RV and I are heading down south for his grandmother’s 80th birthday. We were originally planning on combining that with a trip to Disneyland, but our finances AND our schedules are tight.

03. Blogger meet-up tomorrow! I can’t wait to re-meet Eden and Sophia. I didn’t get to chat with them much during Foodbuzz.

04. Yesterday I was extremely thankful that I have good health benefits. RV has been getting his medical bills in the mail, and I see how much/little is covered, and I’m just SO grateful my employer is so generous in terms of our health insurance.

05. Today I am thankful that I have found an excellent place to maintain my car. I used to take it to the dealer, but it would frustrate me to no end. I took my car in for an oil change today, and the whole experience just reaffirms my choice to make the switch.

06. I was in the audience of a talk about upcoming fashion, and the woman from Saks Fifth Avenue mentioned how color-blocking is coming back. She said something about how it’ll be okay to wear a solid purple and pair it with a solid green and wear dress pants. Of course, I was sitting there in my purple, green and work pants. :/ Apparently I am ahead of the game in terms of fashion.

07. In a few weeks, I’m heading off to a black-and-white holiday ball, so I’m on the lookout for fancy floor-length dresses/gowns. I might post updates on what I do/don’t find.

Little Things – #10

Being able to parallel park.

If you drive in this city, unless you plan on circling the blocks for hours, you’d better know how to parallel park. It’s difficult enough for those who can parallel park, but really there aren’t that many “pull-up” spots around here for those who cannot.

If you mention parallel parking to my mother, she will recount the story of how she set up cones on the street to teach me how to parallel park. I don’t like to give her all the credit, so I like to say that I really learned on my own, though practicing with her cones was “helpful.” ;)

For those who still need a little help, check out this video.
