For the New Year’s Eve celebration, we actually made two stops during the evening. Both were low key and at friends’ homes. It’s how I like to spend the last night of my year these days. There were a few guests at the second party whom we hadn’t seen in AGES. So great to catch up! We stayed out until well past 2am, but neither RV nor I had very much to drink, so waking up today wasn’t terribly difficult. No hangovers at least!
For the month of January, I signed up to participate in the Eat in Month 2011 Challenge that Diana is hosting. RV and I already eat in quite a bit, but I want to make a conscious effort to do that more often, at least for a month. It won’t be easy though. I made plans to meet up at a coffee shop tomorrow [my favorite one]… I can’t be giving up already!
So how did we do on day one?
Eat in Month 2010 – 01.01.11
Brunch:
tater tots and a fried eggSnack:
chips and peach salsaDinner:
miso soup w/ owl limpets, seaweed, and tofu
Dungeness crab
mashed potatoes
After a brunch of twice-fried tater tots and fried eggs, RV went fishing while I stayed in for the day. I sent him off with some bread, sardines, a fruit leather, yogurt, and some chips to ensure that he had energy for his day.
I then cleaned up the house a bit in preparation for an afternoon movie with Keane, even cleaning the toilet! ICK! He brought over Kingdom of Heaven, which I thought was a really good film. If you watch it, check out the director’s cut version because it includes all of the intended story. A lot of it was cut out for the theater!
In the evening, the sister came over, and we worked on getting our very random dinner started.

RV didn’t bring back any fish, but he did come back with something I’d seen before, but never intended on eating – owl limpets. He’d read up about them on a bunch on different blogs and forums and decided to forage for owl limpets, just to try them out. You often see them hanging out on rocks, and they taste a bit like abalone. He didn’t bring back very many, so we threw them into the miso soup for flavoring.

It does not look photogenic once de-shelled, but I didn’t think to grab a picture in time. Keane took this one for me.
RV also caught his third Dungeness crab of the season.

It isn’t commercial size, but it made for a very tasty treat. While we were preparing the mashed potatoes, he sent me a text about starting up the Ultimate Crab Destruction Unit #1, so I knew he was bringing one home from the ocean tonight!
Have you ever foraged for ingredients? Would you?
If you asked me a year ago, I probably wouldn’t because I’d be afraid to misidentify something and end up poisoning myself. Then again, fishing for food is a form of it as well.
After our eclectic meal, we watched Moon. Also a very good movie. It was on Instant Netflix, so if you have that, definitely check it out!
The first day of the new year is up! Before we know it, the month will go by as will the year. Yikes!
How did you spend your first day of 2011?
Today’s prompt: Beautifully different. Think about what makes you different and what you do that lights people up. Reflect on all the things that make you different – you’ll find they’re what make you beautiful.
I am unique in my flaws and peculiarities, just as EVERYONE ELSE is. There is not a single quality that stands out as JUST me. How would that be possible?! The combination of those qualities might lead to fewer matches, but really? Just look at the Enneagram. There are the nine types with their wings. Look at the personality types. We all fit into a type or combination of types!
I see the point of the prompt, to recognize one’s qualities and to appreciate them. I suppose the wording threw my head for a spin. I thought I had phrased out what I wanted to write on the train ride home this evening, but I’m at a loss for words. I’m a 4, the Individual, and here I am unable to or just would rather not point them out.
So just go read Lizz’s post for the day. It’s what I wanted to say, but more eloquent.
On a side note, just came back from watching How Do You Know, starring Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson.

We got hooked up with screening tickets, so it was a nice evening out, but not really OUTSIDE in the rain. Definitely a romantic comedy. RV said it was good for that type of movie. Hah. There’s a little awkwardness in the characters’ interactions that makes it all too adorable and cute. For a 119 minute movie, you get your money’s worth.
This post is part of #reverb10, an annual event and month-long online initiative to reflect on this year and manifest what’s next for 2011.
Saturday evening was the fancy holiday ball that I got my hair and make-up done for. Hair took nearly four hours because it was at an awkward length that the stylist [still-in-training] couldn’t seem to figure out. Make-up didn’t take nearly as long. I wasn’t all too thrilled with it since all photos taken with a flash resulted in me appearing as if I had a white mask over my eyes. Ugh.
Anyway, here I am before the party:

And here I am with my date, Andrew. If any ladies out there need a holiday party date, he’s a great candidate. I had to leave him alone for about an hour while I worked the door, and by the time I came back, he’d already mixed and mingled!

It was a fantastic evening. Lots of fun throughout, chatting up with friends and seeing everyone all glammed out! I, unfortunately, partied a little too hard with the wine. The trolley ride to the after party gave me motion sickness. :/ It was not pretty. Although we already had tickets, we didn’t end up making it to the after party. RV picked us up and took care of me the rest of the evening.
I spent Sunday on the couch trying to keep my food down instead of checking out the Dickens Fair as originally planned. Went through a lot of Instant Netflix! :p

Yellowstone: Battle for Life: Winter
Yellowstone: Battle for Life: Summer
Bottle Shock
The Amish: People of Preservation
Colossal Squid: Colossal Squid
Disneyland Resort: Behind the Scenes
Since all flights to Vegas seem pretty booked up for this weekend, I’m missing out on a girls’ weekend. I’ll get to check out the fair instead!
Last night, I crossed off #58 on the 101 in 1001: Go see a show at Cafe Du Nord.
San Francisco is home to many historic venues, and for some reason when I was creating my list, I wrote Cafe Du Nord down as one of those venues I’d love to visit soon. Built in 1906, Du Nord has a history as a brothel, a speakeasy, and the meeting place of secret societies.

I couldn’t put off a visit to Cafe Du Nord any longer when I found out that two bands that I know and love were playing on the same night as a combined effort to support the documentary film, Recovering Irma. This documentary is an independent film project, aimed at breaking the silence of domestic violence by lending a contemporary voice to a family’s complex inheritance.

I was also introduced to Lion Riding Horses, another local rock band.
It was a Sunday night, and I had work the next day, so I didn’t stay out for too long. Here’s a photograph to document the moment I finally crossed this “to do” off my list!
