Hello people of the internet! Thanks for stopping by. I think San Francisco is one dirty city, but I love it here. I'm a 9-5er with a mission to eat, drink, and travel as often as my resources allow. Documenting it is part of the fun.

Wine and Love #24

Wine and LoveWine and Love is a series brought to you by Walking With Nora. It’s basically a list of what makes us reach for the wine this week and a list of stuff we’re loving.

Wine…

* I might be sick. I feel a little sinus pressure, and my throat is sore in the morning. My body is fighting something. It hasn’t succumbed to whatever it may be, thankfully.

* Going to the gym. I bought a deal [one month membership + a massage] that expires tomorrow, so we have to go to the gym. I’m not a fan of the machines, so I’m hoping for either interesting classes or sauna/steam room/spa that isn’t too crowded.

Love…

* Crab cakes! I’ve been encouraging Ryan to blog more, so check out Urban Piscivore [soon to be Seafoodie]. These are the crab cakes and paprika aioli from Crabsgiving.

* Portland house is no longer an issue nagging me. The property manager is doing his job!

* Planning our trip to Costa Rica. I, more or less, have our itinerary figured out, as well as our accommodations. It’s crazy how much there is to do in a country that is the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined. I’ve made some reservations, but I also want to keep some free time in case we find other things that we want to do.

* 12 Changes in 12 Months – January will be dedicated to Sasha. I will take her for a 20-30 minute morning walk every day. I started slacking off at the end of December. This is part of the goal of sleeping early to wake up early in order to take her out.

* I am starting up a new 101 in 1001 list. I hope to have my list updated by this weekend.

Friday Fun Day

I had an orthodontist appointment mid-morning. Normally, I would rush back to work after an appointment, but I decided to take the day off.

Like most mornings, I started off with a smoothie.

Had I known what excruciating pain I’d go through in the next hour or so, I would have mixed in some pain meds. Unfortunately, I didn’t know better.

I thought to myself, What could possibly be more wonderful than getting my braces off? Let me tell you – getting braces off with a numb mouth.

First, the brackets were popped off. Each bracket made a loud crunching sound that sent chills down the spine. I thought she was popping my teeth off.

Then, the scraping of the adhesive. Ow ow ow ow! I think my teeth are just ultra-sensitive as most websites describe the entire process as slightly uncomfortable.

By this time, I was so ready to get out of the office, but little did I know, the most painful part of the process was to come – polishing. It was frustrating because it hurt like a bitch, and the orthodontist wouldn’t stop polishing. My pain tolerance isn’t high, so this part was torturous for me. If you want to make me suffer, polish my teeth. I’m turning to tooth paste for sensitive teeth for the next few weeks.

Since I was free for the rest of the day, I met up with RV for lunch at Spice Kit. I ordered a Ssam [Korean wrap] – rice paper, red leaf lettuce, cucumbers, seasoned rice, marinated bean sprouts, roasted pork, kimchi, and signature ssam sauce. The roasted pork was marinated in lemongrass and spices – tasty!

I am still waiting to pick up a retainer to wear for the rest of my life. Since I’m leaving for Vegas at the end of this week, I’ll have to wait a few extra days before going in again. Hopefully my teeth don’t move too much in the meantime!

After lunch, I hung out at RV’s office until happy hour. One of the guys brought in his dog Rudy, so I hung out with the pooch for a bit. From the side, he looks a little like a gray Chewbacca.

For happy hour, I went to City Beer Store with some friends. It was my first time there. It’s a small space with a great beer selection! I started off with Russian River’s Erudition. I also tried Sierra Nevada’s 30th Anniversay Fritz and Ken’s Ale [pictured below] and Fifty Fifty’s Baril Rouge Baltique.

By the time I left happy hour, the pain of removing braces remained a distant memory. A chapter of four and a half years finally came to a close.

Cuatro de Mayo Margarita Cupcakes

I have wanted to bake cupcakes for some time. It’s even on my 101 in 1001 list.

041 – Learn to bake edible cupcakes.

What prompted me to finally take action was when I saw that Mission Minis now offers cupcake classes. I wanted to learn, so I turned to my cupcake baking friend, Jean, instead. What better way to spend an evening than learning something new AND catching up with an old friend. We went to high school together, and she and the sister went to college together.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, we made margarita cupcakes, aka lemon cupcakes with lime-and-tequila frosting.

Cinco de Mayo cupcakes Tequila!

See, real tequila used!

I learned mostly from observing. While Jean did most of the earlier work, the sister and I did the decorating…

Yes, that is a smiling poo cupcake.

Other notables: person doing the splits, a Christmas tree, Golden Gate Bridge, a yin yang, a heart, a smiley face. There was also a Ninja Turtle and Orville Redenbacher [both not pictured].

Recipe to come [probably]!

020 – Document jaw surgery. Before and after.

Hi guys! I haven’t updated very much about the whole jaw/braces situation in awhile. Mainly, it was because there wasn’t anything new to report other than braces being adjusted month after month. Fast forward to a few weeks ago at my orthodontist appointment, the orthodontist hit me with some good news: the braces are coming off next month!

It’s time to update the timeline.

Over four years since my first orthodontist appointment [longer than many of my current relationships], I will finally be free. I have a feeling that after so long, my teeth are absolutely grody. I’m going to have to whiten them and all that fun stuff, but it will be worth it.

Before surgery, I would do everything I could to avoid smiling for photos. I would make faces, eat stuff, etc. because I wanted to draw attention away from the deformity. This photo is from October 2008.

Lime

As a habit, I still make faces in photos, but here I am – April 2011, over a year after surgery and just a month away from being free of braces. I know I’ll be wearing a retainer for a very long time, but at least I’ll be smiling.

Red Door Cafe

Happy Friday to all!

PS – last chance: Spring photo book giveaway ends tonight!

Into the Falls

Now that I look back on it, I never did my recap of Niagara Falls. While in Toronto last August, Naly’s parents lent us their car, so that we could get around more easily. Niagara Falls was not too far away and on my list, so we had to make a trip out there!

We walked the width of the falls before jumping on the Maid of the Mist, which is totally worth it if you want to get up close and personal with the falls!

You got some great views of the falls from the boat…

…before you got drenched! It felt like the heaviest rainfall imaginable. Even the ponchos they gave us couldn’t keep all the water out, so of course, I looked a little miserable in this picture.

Afterward, we went into the gift shop! I didn’t pick anything up to remember the visit by, but we did find something humorous.

Looks like someone snuck San Francisco in there! More photos of Niagara Falls: here!
